A Blue Ridge Parkway Senior Portrait | Lexie

There are some sessions that stay with you long after you put the camera away, and Lexie’s Blue Ridge Parkway senior portraits were exactly that kind of evening.

I first met Lexie through my sweet friend Sara, and it didn’t take long for us to click. What started as simply knowing one another through a mutual friend quickly turned into a friendship of our own. We have so many shared interests, values, and beliefs, which made getting to spend an entire evening together in the mountains all the more special.

For her senior portrait session, we headed to one of my absolute favorite places along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I’m keeping the exact location to myself—some places are just too special to share with the entire internet—but this particular part of the Parkway has become incredibly meaningful to me over the years.

Whether I’m photographing a session or simply driving up to watch a beautiful Blue Ridge sunset, it is one of those places I never seem to get tired of. There is something about being surrounded by the mountains, watching the light change, and seeing the layers of the Blue Ridge fade into the distance that always feels special to me.

It is one of the reasons I love creating Blue Ridge Parkway senior portraits so much. The mountains bring a sense of peace, depth, and beauty to a gallery that is hard to recreate anywhere else.

An Unexpected Walk Through the Blue Ridge Mountains

Our evening started a little differently than planned.

The entrance I typically use to access the area was closed, which meant Lexie and I had a much longer walk ahead of us than I had anticipated.

At first, it was simply an unexpected change of plans. But looking back, I think that extra time together ended up being one of my favorite parts of the evening.

As we walked, we talked about God, the Bible, our lives, our interests, and everything in between. It gave us time to slow down, get to know one another better, and strengthen a friendship that had already started to form.

There is something I really love about portrait sessions that allow room for moments like these. Yes, we are there to create beautiful photographs, but I never want the experience to feel like someone simply showed up, stood in front of my camera, and left.

The time we spend together is part of the story too.

By the time we reached the places I had envisioned for her portraits, everything seemed to come together perfectly.

A Perfect Evening for Senior Portraits

The weather, sunlight, and sky were everything we could have asked for and more.

That warm mountain light poured across the landscape, the sky gave us gorgeous color, and Lexie looked absolutely stunning against the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was one of those evenings when I kept looking at the back of my camera and getting more excited about what we were creating.

Her gallery became one of my favorite senior portrait sessions I have photographed to date.

The combination of soft light, mountain views, and Lexie’s personality made these Blue Ridge Parkway senior portraits feel especially beautiful and unique.

What made these photographs even more meaningful, though, was how much of Lexie we were able to incorporate into them.

She brought flowers, her Bible, and a pair of boots for us to use throughout the session. Each one gave us new posing ideas and helped create variety within her gallery, but more importantly, they made the photographs personal.

Senior Portraits That Feel Like You

One of the things I loved most about Lexie’s session was how personal it felt.

The flowers, her Bible, and her boots were simple details, but they added so much to the experience and the finished gallery. They gave us opportunities to create photographs that felt different from one another while still keeping the entire session true to who she is.

That is something I always want for senior portraits.

Senior year is such a unique season of life. You are standing somewhere between everything that has been familiar for years and everything that is still ahead of you. Graduation, college, work, new places, new friendships, and so many unknowns are just around the corner.

It is a season that can pass incredibly quickly.

Senior portraits are about more than having a nice photograph for graduation announcements. They are a way of remembering who you were in this exact chapter of your life.

For me, the best Blue Ridge Parkway senior portraits are the ones that feel personal instead of generic. The location is beautiful, of course, but the real heart of the session comes from the person being photographed.

The things you love, the places that mean something to you, your personality, your faith, your interests, and even the smallest details can all become part of that story.

Lexie’s session was beautiful because nothing about it felt forced or generic. It felt peaceful, personal, and completely true to her.

Senior Portraits in the North Carolina Mountains

Some of my favorite photographs from the entire day happened after we left the main grounds and made our way through the woods near their ceremony site. Calling it a portrait location almost does not do it justice. We hiked along the side of the mountain to reach one of the most incredible places for their bride and groom portraits, and Ashley somehow managed to do the entire thing barefoot. Meanwhile, I finished the adventure with bleeding blisters from my leather shoes.

She handled the side of that mountain barefoot better than I did in shoes, which I still find hilarious. Every bit of it was completely worth it. Those photographs feel like the kind you simply cannot recreate. The landscape, the light, the two of them, and their willingness to trust me enough to take the extra walk all came together at exactly the right time.
