If you’ve ever dreamed of saying “I do” in the North Carolina mountains, surrounded by sweeping views, golden summer light, and your closest loved ones — then Joah & Courtney’s Sky Retreat wedding is all the inspiration you need.
Held in late August at one of the High Country’s most breathtaking venues, their wedding day was emotional, elegant, and full of meaningful personal touches. As both a bridesmaid and the owner of Ashley Logan Photography, this celebration holds a special place in my heart — not only because the groom is my brother-in-law, but because it brought together everything I love about photographing weddings in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Captured beautifully by my associates Sarah and Savannah, every detail of this day — from the stunning stone patio ceremony to the mountain portraits and heartfelt reception moments — reflected Joah & Courtney’s deep love and the natural magic of a Sky Retreat wedding.
From Bumble to the Blue Ridge: A Love Story Across State Lines
Joah and Courtney’s story started like many modern romances — with a swipe on Bumble. But their connection was far from ordinary. At the time, Courtney lived in Tennessee, and Joah was in North Carolina. Despite the miles between them, their relationship grew strong quickly, and before long, Courtney made the move to NC to be closer to Joah.
But when it came time to propose, Joah did something incredibly thoughtful: he brought Courtney back to her hometown in Ohio and surprised her with a proposal. He then executed a surprise party surrounded by her closest friends and family. It was sweet, intentional, and full of the warmth that would carry through their wedding day.
Why They Chose Sky Retreat in Purlear, NC
Set on 30 private acres with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Sky Retreat is one of the High Country’s most sought-after wedding venues — and for good reason. With its scenic overlooks, all-season availability, and luxurious-yet-natural vibe, it offers couples the best of both worlds: upscale design and down-to-earth beauty.
Joah and Courtney wanted a venue that felt intimate and scenic, yet comfortable for guests and full of character. Sky Retreat weddings deliver on all fronts with:
- An elegant indoor reception hall with vaulted ceilings and a wall of windows
- A gorgeous stone patio for their ceremony, set against the mountain backdrop
- A cozy veranda with a fireplace — perfect for cocktail hour and mingling
- On-site log cabin lodging so guests could stay on the property for a full weekend experience
This venue is especially ideal for couples planning a destination wedding in the North Carolina mountains. Its proximity to Boone, Wilkesboro, North Wilkesboro, Blowing Rock, and West Jefferson gives it that “getaway” feel, while still offering modern conveniences and luxury touches.
A Beautiful Stone Patio Ceremony
The ceremony took place on Sky Retreat’s signature stone patio — a space that perfectly frames the panoramic mountain views. With late summer light filtering through the trees and a soft breeze moving through the hills, the setting couldn’t have been more romantic.
Courtney was glowing in her classic white gown — elegant, effortless, and timeless. Her bouquet featured soft, neutral florals with greenery, reflecting the natural tones of the surrounding landscape. Joah’s expression as he saw her walk down the aisle was unforgettable.
Surrounded by their family and closest friends (and yes, I was honored to be one of the bridesmaids!), their ceremony was heartfelt and deeply personal. Every detail — from the simple floral accents to the way the couple said their own vows — added to the intimacy and meaning of the moment.
Portraits with a View
After the ceremony, Sarah and Savannah (my amazing associate photographers) captured Joah and Courtney’s portraits across the Sky Retreat property. The venue’s rolling hills, long-range views, and architecture provide endless options for photo locations.
One of the best things about a Sky Retreat wedding is how the light plays across the landscape in the evening. During golden hour, the entire mountainside glows — and Joah and Courtney’s portraits during this time are truly magical.
From candid laughter to quiet, romantic moments, Sarah and Savannah perfectly documented the balance of elegance and authenticity that defines a luxury mountain wedding.

Stand-Out Moment: The First Look
One of the most unforgettable — and absolutely hilarious — moments from Joah and Courtney’s wedding day was a surprise that no one (except a few insiders) saw coming. During the bride’s first look with her father, Courtney’s dad, Larry, thought he was about to turn around and see his daughter in her gown for the very first time. But instead… he was greeted by Joah’s dad, Jim, wearing a thrifted wedding dress and veil, fully committed to the prank and standing right where Courtney should have been. The look on Larry’s face was priceless — pure shock, followed by uncontrollable laughter from everyone watching.
Thankfully, this epic moment was captured on video — and it even gained traction on TikTok, going semi-viral and racking up thousands of views. It was the perfect icebreaker and set the tone for a day filled with joy, humor, and unforgettable memories.
